How about using the compiler switch to change between signed & unsigned 
chars?  It sounds like that is the problem.

The last I heard, Bob Supnik was at DEC in Littleton, MA.  I have that 
address someplace but it seems to be at home.  You could also check the 
alt.sys.pdp11 or alt.sys.pdp8 FAQs or check with Doug Jones, 
jones@cs.uiowa.edu who edited the alt.sys.pdp8 FAQ; he had Supnik's address 
a while back.
